"THIS WAY OR THAT WAY"

I was in a group with two other people and we had to find a location that was in the middle between all of us. After hours of tedious math we finally pinpointed this round-a-bout as our middle location. When we got to the spot we immediately wanted to play with the One Way signs posted around middle. We also noticed the tree's branch had nice movement to it and knew we wanted to play with that as well. After brainstorming we decided to take an Alice in Wonderland approach and play with direction and arrows. The arrow is sitting in the tree and is not only playing with the direction of the branch, but it also is a reflection of the Cheshire Cat (hence the colors used). It is the main piece that your eye is drawn to and is the first element of confusion to the viewer. this piece is meant to evoke questions from the viewer. "Which way is the right way?", "What happens when I choose to go against the flow of traffic?", etcetera.
As we were installing this piece so many people were slowing down and giving us looks of confusion and wonder, which played along with out theme nicely. Then, as I was taking a time lapse of the finished installation (video uploaded below), a huge cement truck stopped in the middle of the round-a-bout because it did not make a sharp enough turn so the cars had to wait as it made a three point turn. All the while I was filming the stopped cars in front. In the 30 minutes that this piece was up so much confusion was created, which gave some fun reactions and encouragement that our piece was fulfilling its intended purpose.
